Proof of concept (PoC) design

I help investigate whether a critical part of an idea can work. A proof of concept gives a specific capability or mechanism a focused experiment, so you can make the next investment with a better understanding of its potential and limitations.
A PoC is useful when the project depends on a question that needs practical investigation: whether a particular interaction is workable, whether an AI capability produces useful results, or whether a proposed workflow can operate with the available inputs.
It serves a different purpose from a prototype used to explore an experience or an MVP intended for real use. I help define the experiment, design the relevant interaction and build within the agreed scope. Where feasibility depends on specialist engineering, we identify that expertise and collaborate on the investigation.
WHAT A PROOF OF CONCEPT NEEDS TO ESTABLISH
Identify the assumption that could stop the idea
Define the capability that needs investigating and the decision its result should support. A useful PoC begins with a question precise enough to answer. The uncertainty might concern an input, a technical dependency, an interaction or the relationship between several steps in a process.
We clarify what would have to be true for the wider idea to remain worth pursuing.
I help separate that feasibility question from questions about customer interest, usability or commercial value. Those may need different forms of investigation. We agree the conditions of the experiment, the evidence that would be useful and the aspects of the wider product that can be left outside its scope.
Build the smallest experiment that can answer it
Create a focused demonstration with enough real behaviour to investigate the critical assumption. The experiment may use a simple interface, a limited workflow or a working connection to a model or service.
It needs the behaviour relevant to the question, with other parts simplified or simulated where appropriate.
I design how the experiment should work and can build a scoped demonstration or internal tool. For dependencies requiring specialist development, we can work with the appropriate technical collaborator. We record what is real, what is simulated and which constraints have been set aside. That helps everyone assess the result without mistaking a controlled demonstration for a completed product.
Evaluate it against agreed conditions
Look at relevant examples, practical limits and failure cases alongside the most promising result. A demonstration can be convincing with one carefully chosen example. Evaluation asks how the capability behaves under the conditions that matter to the proposed use.
We agree relevant inputs and cases, including the situations most likely to challenge the idea.
For an AI-supported task, the investigation may consider output usefulness, response time, correction effort and the information the model needs. Other concepts will have different criteria. I help connect the technical behaviour with the intended experience and make the remaining dependencies visible. The conclusion stays specific to what the experiment was able to investigate.
Decide what it would take to continue
Use the findings to choose whether to develop the idea, change the approach or investigate a different direction. The outcome brings together the experiment, results, limitations and a recommendation for the next step.
We identify which questions have become clearer and which would need further work before a pilot or MVP.
A successful PoC can justify continuing, but the wider product will still need an appropriate experience, operating model and implementation. We discuss what can be reused from the experiment and what was deliberately temporary. If the idea does not hold under the relevant conditions, that finding can guide a revised concept or help avoid a larger commitment to the wrong approach.
