Visual brand identity

CO.LABS visual identity

I create visual identities with a clear idea behind them and enough range to work across real applications. Typography, colour, imagery and composition come together in a language that feels particular to the business.

The work can involve creating an identity for a new business or evolving one that no longer expresses the organisation well.

We start with its context, audience and character, then explore visual directions that give those qualities a considered form.

I develop the selected direction into a usable identity system, with appropriate assets, guidance and examples. The aim is recognisability across the places the brand needs to appear, with room for variation and development as its needs change.

BUILDING A VISUAL LANGUAGE OF YOUR OWN

  • Find a visual idea that belongs to the business

Explore directions grounded in the organisation's position, character and the meaning it wants to convey. I begin by understanding what the identity needs to express and the context in which people will encounter it.

That informs the references, visual territories and concepts we explore, with the reasoning made visible as the work develops.

Originality comes through choices: which ideas are worth pursuing, how elements relate and what gives the direction a particular character. AI can support exploration where useful, while the selection and development need a deliberate point of view. We compare the concepts in relation to the business and its applications, then choose a direction with enough substance to develop further.

  • Build a coherent identity around it

Bring the mark, typography, colour and imagery into a recognisable system with appropriate flexibility. The identity may include a logo or mark, type choices, a colour palette, imagery, illustration and principles for composition.

I consider how those elements support each other and which need to remain stable across different uses.

In my unselected CO.LABS proposal, a flexible graphic element expressed the movement and character of performing arts, with more defined typography and colour providing continuity. Other businesses will call for different relationships between consistency and variation. The system grows from the central idea and the practical needs of the brief, giving people several ways to express the same identity coherently.

  • Test the identity in the places it needs to work

Develop representative applications and assess the direction under realistic visual and practical conditions. A concept becomes easier to judge when it appears in the settings where the business will use it. We select relevant applications, which might include a website, product interface, presentation, document, signage or print material.

I use those examples to investigate legibility, hierarchy, scale, contrast and the relationship between content and visual character. This can reveal where the identity needs more range or a simpler treatment. The applications also help your team see how the direction can be carried forward, with practical examples of how to adapt the system while retaining its recognisable qualities.

  • Leave a system the team can carry forward

Provide organised assets and guidance that make the identity usable beyond the original design work. The handoff is shaped around who will use the identity and what they need to produce. It can include brand guidelines, asset files, templates and examples for the agreed touchpoints, with clarity about the elements and usage rights involved.

I explain the principles behind the system alongside its more fixed specifications. That helps future collaborators understand where consistency matters and where adaptation is possible. We can also identify the next applications that deserve design attention. The result gives the business a foundation it can use and develop, with enough direction to preserve the character of the original idea.
