UI foundations & design systems

I help give a product a consistent visual and interaction foundation. That can range from a compact UI kit for a first version to a broader design system with reusable components, patterns and guidance for the team.
UI foundations define recurring decisions such as typography, colour, spacing and state styles.
A design system brings those foundations together with components and patterns, so the product can evolve with fewer decisions being reinvented on each screen.
I develop the system around actual product needs and the people who will use it. We can build on an existing brand identity, establish a visual direction or consolidate patterns that have grown apart. The result gives designers and developers a more dependable shared reference for creating the interface.
HOW A CONSISTENT INTERFACE TAKES SHAPE
Establish the visual foundations
Define the recurring visual decisions that make the product coherent and give it appropriate character. We look at how the product communicates hierarchy, actions, status and identity. Typography, colour, spacing, layout and iconography need to work together across different screens and conditions.
I help establish those foundations and express suitable values as design tokens: named decisions that can be applied consistently, such as the colour used for a primary action or a recurring spacing interval. Accessibility considerations inform the choices and their intended use. The foundation can be restrained or expressive according to the product, with clear reasoning about where visual character supports the task and where consistency is more useful.
Create reusable components and patterns
Build the controls and recurring interactions the product actually needs, including their different states. A component needs more definition than its appearance in one example. A form field, for instance, may need a label, supporting text, an error message and different interaction states.
Related components also need to work together in a complete task.
I develop reusable Figma components, appropriate variants and patterns for recurring journeys. We consider content, responsive behaviour and the relationship between elements, selecting the most relevant parts of the product to address first. That gives the team a practical foundation that can expand as new needs emerge, with less ambiguity about how an interface should behave.
Connect the design system to implementation
Give designers and developers a shared understanding of the components, values and behaviours in use. Design files and working software can diverge when definitions are incomplete or decisions are made separately. Shared naming, documented behaviour and clear priorities make it easier to resolve those differences.
I collaborate with developers on the relationship between the Figma system and its implementation, including token definitions and component specifications where useful. A code library can be included where that work is explicitly scoped. We agree how changes will be communicated and which version represents the intended behaviour. The aim is to make the system a usable reference in delivery and reduce avoidable interpretation during handoff.
Make the system easy to use and evolve
Provide guidance, examples and an adoption approach suited to the size of the product and team. People need to know when to use a component, what can change and how to handle a case the system does not yet cover.
I prepare examples and documentation around those practical questions, keeping the level of detail proportionate to the team.
We can also agree ownership and a simple process for adding or revising patterns. Adoption may begin with a few frequently used elements, then extend as relevant screens are updated. The result supports consistency while leaving room for new needs and deliberate visual development, with an understandable path for the people maintaining the product.
