Brand positioning

CO.LABS wordmark

I help clarify what a business should be chosen for and by whom. Brand positioning connects the value of the offer with its audience and alternatives, giving communication and visual direction a more specific foundation.

A position influences what the brand emphasises, how it describes its value and which expectations it sets.

It needs to be relevant to the people you want to reach and credible for the business delivering the offer.

We can examine an existing position or develop one as part of a new identity. The work draws on business context, customer understanding and the choices available in the market. I bring those inputs into a direction your team can use, including personality, messaging priorities and a brief for visual expression.

WHAT GIVES YOUR BRAND A CLEAR POSITION

  • Understand the audience and the choices they face

Ground the positioning in the people you want to serve and the alternatives they consider. We begin with the audience, the circumstances in which the offer becomes relevant and what matters in the decision.

Existing customer research, sales conversations and feedback may already provide valuable evidence; where important questions remain, we can investigate them.

We also examine how alternatives describe themselves and which ideas are already familiar in the category. The purpose is to understand what would make a meaningful difference to someone choosing between options. That gives the positioning a stronger basis than a list of qualities the business would like to be associated with.

  • Decide what the brand should be chosen for

Make clear choices about the value, audience and distinguishing qualities the brand will emphasise. A useful position makes priorities visible. We consider whom the business is best placed to serve, the value it offers and the reasons someone could believe the promise.

We also discuss the trade-offs: which expectations to meet, which to challenge and which audiences are less central.

I help bring those choices into a positioning direction and concise internal statement. The wording records the reasoning and gives others a shared reference for decisions. We distinguish what is already supported by evidence from what remains a proposition to assess, so confidence in the position can develop through use and feedback.

  • Translate the position into personality and language

Give the team a practical sense of how the business should sound and present itself. Personality becomes useful when it affects expression. We explore what the position suggests about tone, emphasis, vocabulary and the way the business relates to people.

Examples help make those choices concrete: an introduction, a service explanation or the language used around an important interaction.

I can develop messaging priorities and principles that support a consistent voice across relevant touchpoints. The direction should be specific enough to guide a writer or designer and flexible enough to accommodate different situations. It also needs to remain credible for the people behind the business, so the experience supports the impression being created.

  • Give the visual direction a clear brief

Connect strategic choices with the ideas, qualities and constraints the identity should express. The positioning should help the team assess a visual concept on something more useful than personal preference. We define creative principles, consider relevant reference territories and identify what the design needs to communicate or avoid.

I translate that into a brief for identity development and criteria for comparing directions. We can review concepts with stakeholders and investigate audience interpretation where the decision calls for it. The outcome links strategy with visual judgement, giving the selected direction a rationale and the team a shared basis for developing it across the brand's applications.
